You are bidding on a rare vintage hardcover book with original dustjacket titled Here Is Alaska. By Evelyn Stefansson, the wife of the famous Arctic Explorer, Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1943. This is the collectible First Edition. This is a very rare and valuable signed book by the author. The book is hand-signed and inscribed by the author, Evelyn Stefansson, on the half-title page. Stefansson inscribed the book to Mary Margaret McBride on January 15, 1945. Interestingly, Mary Margaret McBride was also a very famous woman. Mary Margaret McBride (November 16, 1899 – April 7, 1976) was an American radio interview host and writer. Her popular radio shows spanned more than 40 years. In the 1940s the daily audience for her housewife-oriented program numbered from six to eight million listeners. She was called “The First Lady of Radio.” Foreword by Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Photographs by Frederick Machetanz and others. Curiously, and presumably as a wartime paper-saving measure, the dust-jacket was printed on the reverse of the dustwrapper for Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ novel *Cross Creek*. An attractive look at Alaska by the wife of a noted Arctic explorer. Information on the Alaskans, their country, travel, winters, fishing, dairy, dog teams, little Diomede Island and its settlement, etc. Evelyn Stefansson was much more than the wife of an Arctic explorer; she became an authority on the Arctic in her own right. In 1939, when she first went to work for Vilhjalmur Stefansson as a researcher, her background work had been in the performing arts, most notably as a puppeteer. Through her work at the Stefansson Library, and after her 1941 marriage to Stefansson, she developed a keen interest in and a deep understanding of the geography and people living within the Arctic Circle. As a researcher and writer, she collaborated with her husband on writing projects, many under government contract. She lectured often on the Arctic. Mrs. Stefansson made several trips to the Arctic, including two trans-polar flights in the 1950’s. Visits to Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, and the Soviet Arctic were made to gather material for her books – introductory works on the Arctic “for intelligent teenagers and uninformed adults”. In 1951 the Stefansson Library moved to Dartmouth College, and Evelyn served as librarian of the world-famous collection. She also lectured in geography and polar studies, and was twice director of the Arctic Seminar at Dartmouth. After Stefansson’s death in 1962, Evelyn remained for a short while with the Collection. She later moved to Washington, D.C., and in 1964 was married to John Ulric Nef. Throughout her life Evelyn Stefansson maintained a deep interest in the arts. She was an avid photographer and took many pictures on her trips for use in her books. Her musical abilities were well developed in vocal music and on the recorder and she performed in many student plays at Dartmouth College. The papers of Evelyn Stefansson contain manuscripts for her books and for many articles and book reviews. Correspondence with friends and publishers, trip diaries, and notebooks detail the many aspects of jer busy life. The papers occupy 7.0 linear feet and are a part of the Vilhjalmur Stefansson Collection on the Polar Regions. Additional information on Evelyn Stefansson may be found in two other of the Collection, entitled Arctic Seminar and Stefansson Collection. She was born Evelyn Schwartz on July 24, 1913 in New York City. She married puppeteer Bil Baird at age 19 and became a principal in his marionette performances until their divorce in 1936. She sang at Romany Marie’s restaurant and was an active participant in the cultural life of Greenwich Village. While working at the Gotham Book Mart, she was hired as a research assistant by the well-known Arctic explorer, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, whom she married in 1941. They lived mainly in Hanover, N.H., where she worked with him as a researcher and librarian of his extensive polar library until his death in 1962. She was active in the Polar Studies Program at Dartmouth College and taught its Arctic Seminar for two years. She wrote a best-selling book, Here Is Alaska, first published in 1943. During World War II, she and Stefansson worked as consultants on the Arctic for the Navy and War departments. – See more at: http://news.uchicago.edu/article/2009/12/10/evelyn-stefansson-nef-author-and-philanthropist-1913-2009#sthash.IHhjJmMF.dpufShe was born Evelyn Schwartz on July 24, 1913 in New York City. He was born at Gimli, Manitoba, Canada, of Icelandic descent. He was educated in the universities of North Dakota and of Iowa. He studied anthropology at the graduate school of Harvard University, and for two years was an instructor there. In 1904 and 1905, he made archaeological researches in Iceland. He lived with the Eskimos (referred to now in Canada as the Inuit) of the Mackenzie Delta during the winter of 1906-07, returning alone across country via the Porcupine and Yukon rivers. Under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History, New York, he and Dr. R. M. Anderson undertook the ethnological survey of the Central Arctic coasts of the shores of North America from 1908-12. In 1908, Stefansson made a decision that would affect the rest of his time in Alaska: he hired the Native Inuit guide Natkusiak, who would remain with him as his primary guide for the rest of his Alaska expeditions. At the time he met Natkusiak, the Inuit guide was working for Capt. George B. Leavitt, a Massachusetts whaling ship captain and friend of Stefansson’s who sometimes brought the Arctic explorer replenishments of supplies from the American Museum of Natural History. In 1910, Stefansson discovered a group of previously unknown Eskimos, the blond Eskimos, who had never before seen a white man. During 1913-16 he took command of an expedition to explore the regions west of Parry Archipelago for the Government of Canada. Three ships, the Karluk, the Mary Sachs, and the Alaska were employed. Stefansson abandoned his main ship, the Karluk, when it became stuck in the ice in August/September 1913, leaving the crew with Captain Robert Bartlett of Newfoundland stranded on the frozen Arctic Ocean. The Karluk was eventually crushed, and sank on January 11, 1914. Four men made their way to Herald Island, but died there before they could be rescued. Four other men, including two who had been part of the Sir Ernest Shakelton Antarctic expedition, tried reaching Wrangel Island on their own but perished. The remaining members of the expedition made their way to Wrangel Island where three died. Remaining survivors were picked up by the US fishing schooner King & Winge and the U.S. revenue cutter Bear. Stefansson resumed his explorations by sledge over the Arctic Ocean, here known as the Beaufort Sea, leaving Collinson Point, Alaska in April, 1914. A supporting sledge turned back 75 mi (121 km) offshore, but he and two men continued onward on one sledge, living largely by his rifle on polar game for 96 days until his party reached the Mary Sachs in the autumn. In 1921, he encouraged and planned an expedition for four young men to colonise Wrangel Island north of Siberia, where the eleven survivors of the twenty-two men on the Karluk had lived from January to September 1914. Stefansson had designs for forming an exploration company that would be geared towards individuals interested in touring the Arctic island. Stefansson originally wanted to claim Wrangel Island for the Canadian government. Condition: The book has lovely illustrated binding. The illustration of the cover and dustjacket are the same: three Eskimos. The covers are securely attached with no cracking or splitting of hinges. All pages are clean and tightly bound. The book and dustjacket show some general wear and remain in near-very good condition. The dustjacket has a mylar cover to protect it. This is a very rare and desirable signed book with great provenance! Would make a nice addition to a collection. Great gift idea! (Inventory: S-148) Track Page Views WithAuctiva’s FREE Counter
