eBay E. (Edward) Marshall Scull, (1880-1952), was born into one of Philadelphia’s oldest and most prominent families and grew up on their eleven acre Philadelphia estate in the suburb of Overbrook, called, “The Chesnuts,” which he later inherited. His direct Quaker ancestor, Nicholas Scull II, (1687–1761) was one of the twelve original members of “The Junto,” “a club for mutual improvement” founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1727. Franklin described him as “Nicholas Scull, a surveyor, afterward surveyor-general of the Province of Pennsylvania, who loved books and sometimes made a few verses,” and noted that Scull was fluent in the local Lenape Indian language which allowed him to negotiate land claims between settlers and native Americans. E. Marshall Scull graduated from Haverford College in 1901 with an Arts degree; he had done well receiving prizes as a freshman in Latin and a $60 award for English proficiency. He also had become well acquainted with a 1897 Haverford Graduate, athlete Alfred M. Collins, who had been a star collegiate cricket player when that was still a serious American sport. Almost immediately following Scull’s graduation, the two men embarked upon a hunting safari to East Africa, and they later presented twenty bird skins that they had collected to the Philadelphia Museum of Natural History. Scull opens his book about Alaska and Siberia this way: “We lay under the fly of our tent one sizzling December noontide just south of the equator in British East Africa. … ‘It would be a pleasant contrast to this winter climate,’ remarked Collins as he sipped his lime juice, ‘to spend a summer in the Arctic.’” What should be realized is that going to East Africa may well have been an exciting hunting trip, but it was not at all a trip of exploration. Going to northern Alaska and the Siberian coast was first and foremost a journey of exploration with the hunting as an added bonus. Although the gold rush had opened up certain areas, the territory visited by Scull, Collins and their colleagues had seen very little outside contact; the indigenous peoples – both Alaskans and Siberians – had had very little American/European contact. Scull’s adventurous expedition lasted from June 15 – November 21, 1903 or 1904 (the year is never stated) and combined four distinct hunting trips in the space of five month: (1) walrus and polar bear in the Alaskan arctic, (2) wild sheep in easternmost Siberia, (3) tundra caribou and giant brown bear on the Alaskan Peninsular, and (4) giant moose, white sheep, and black and brown bear on Kenai Peninsular. The route ran north by the inland route over the White pass to the head of the Yukon, down the river, thru Dawson and the Klondike to Nome, thence by steamer across to Siberia and then north to Wrangell Island in the Arctic, and back to southwestern Alaska and to Seattle by the South coast. As the author says, “It would have been hard to plan a more thorough tour of this part of the world for so short a time as we had.“ Collins and Scull were careful and meticulous planners. This trip proved to be the first successful hunting expedition into this part of the Arctic, and they bagged all their trophies except in Siberia. Scull relates how during this phase of the trip, while his colleagues were pursuing the elusive sheep, he spent more time with the indigenous Chukchi people trading chewing gum for artifacts (later donated to the Philadelphia Natural History Museum). The Chukchi were basically autonomous – beyond the reach of the Cossack security forces – and would remain so until 1920 when Lenin’s forces arrived. Imperial Russia and the United States were also enjoying cordial relations following the purchase of Alaska when many Russian traders, fisherman and clergy remained in the territory. Edward Marshall Scull has written a wonderful narrative (he clearly deserved his $60 English prize at Haverford) which is matched with 136 excellent photographs and eleven maps. The Winston book cover and dust cover are a bit restrained in their decoration – almost Quaker in their modesty – but perhaps that is fitting since Scull’s family had a substantial financial interest in the Winston Publishing Co. of Philadelphia, and Edward Marshall was serving as company Treasurer at this time.
