Volume 1. xiii + 510pp + plates and maps as called for. Volume 2. xiii + 671pp + plates and maps as called for. Some wear and bumping to the edges and corners. Bound in library cloth with the usual stamps, stickers and markings, Gilt titles to the upper spines. Pages generally good, though there is the odd handling mark here and there. Title pages a little grubby. A few pages with damp staining to the upper edges (example as shown in the penultimate shot). Blocks with slight leaning. Colour plates as called for, but lacking the maps to the rear of the volumes. Weighty set at over 3.5kg exc pkg. Nansen, one of the most significant figures in the history of Arctic exploration was originally a naturalist. He decided in 1888 to attempt the crossing of Greenland, and with five companions, including Otto Sverdrup, set off in June of that year. The crossing, by small boat, ski and sledge, achieved many important scientific objectives, including meteorological observations, as well as illustrating the ideal methods of Arctic travel. His most important achievements were on the Fram Expedition of 1893-96. He established the nature and drift of the Arctic ice-pack, having deliberately allowed the ship, built to his own design, to be frozen into the ice. During the expedition, Nansen, with one companion and 3 dog sledges, achieved the highest latitude yet attained. One of a number of similar Items I am selling.
